Do you know why it is that you can pay attention to something and hardly pay attention to anything else?

We have tried to capture this phenomenon with the concept of involvement. The literature approaches the phenomenon from many different aspects. One of them is flow, when you are sucked in, enjoyable and easy going. Or engagement in a task, when I throw myself into it. Motivation, when some external or internal driving force keeps me going. Or stress, because something I’m doing is either important or I have doubts. As well as the positive or even negative emotions triggered by what is happening. It is immediately apparent that it is not so easy to grasp the phenomenon of involvement.

The combined result of scientific biomedical, data mining, psychological and computer science research, TR4U (TRacking for You) is an engagement measurement.

Research

After reviewing scientific results, due to the complexity of the term “engagement,” we conducted our own research. This involved experiments analyzing behavior in learning, work, relaxation, and sports situations. For this, we used a custom-developed smart bracelet that records physiological parameters and a simulation environment. This way, you can obtain raw data in your research, which can be analyzed, stored, and used in many ways. To do this, we developed appropriate data storage, evaluation-analyzing systems, and an artificial intelligence module. These form the basis of our complex research system: a software ecosystem and communication solutions consisting of multiple devices.

In our system-based research, we conducted controlled and supervised experiments. In the VR application, volunteers received various tasks, and we simultaneously recorded their interactions and reactions with the physiological parameters measured by our custom-developed smart bracelet. We also collected feedback on the experience through various questionnaires.
The VR environment and tasks were created for the Oculus II display device, utilizing Unreal 3D. Psychologists designed the tasks and questionnaires based on multiple measurement rounds, continuously refining the process. The experiments extended to measure and analyze the impact of learning, frustration, and the experience of self-efficacy.

Using Virtual Reality (VR), the selected situations can be controlled. In VR, it’s possible to create events and measure attributes that are not feasible in real world environments. The custom-developed smart bracelet that records physiological parameters, along with the associated physiological remote meter, provides raw sensor data. While this means more tasks for the software during processing, it allows us to flexibly determine which characteristics of a signal are important to us. The established ecosystem is suitable for integrating additional measuring instruments into the system, whether it’s an EEG or an eye-tracking camera.
